Before the procedure the dentist will take a series of x-rays or perform a CT scan to insure that all of the teeth are health and have a sufficient amount of enamel. The procedure is inadvisable if it will compromise enamel to the degree that it would expose the dentin or pulp layer of the tooth. It might also be an issue if there is a significant amount of previous filling or other dental work in the area.
Your dentist will advise you on the best course of action.
Since a small amount of enamel is being removed, your dentist might recommend a follow up fluoride treatment or a series of fluoride treatments. You will also want to start using a brand of toothpaste that includes fluoride.
A significant amount of research has found that fluoride exposure from multiple sources helps to strengthen tooth enamel. This in turn helps to prevents tooth decay while improving the chances that your remaining enamel remains strong for a long time to come.
